This week’s segment features Arden the 3-year-old sphynx!! Arden is owned by Dr. Janzen and accidentally slipped out of the house one day and became lost. Thankfully for Arden he is tattooed and he also has a microchip implanted under his skin. These are both forms of permanent identification on him that cannot be removed and are sure-fire ways that if he was found he would be able to be recovered. Every year, countless pets go missing — whether they wander too far from home, slip their collar, or are sadly stolen. It can happen to even the most careful owners, even our veterinarians. That’s why permanent identification is one of the best ways to make sure your pet always has a way back to you.
A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, that’s placed just under your pet’s skin — usually between the shoulder blades. Each chip has a unique identification number that’s registered with your contact details in a secure national database. If your pet is found and scanned by a vet, shelter, or animal control officer, your information pops up so they can reach you straight away. Microchipping is quick, safe, and lasts for life — it can’t fall off or get lost like a collar tag. This information needs to be kept up to date however, every time you move or change phone numbers.
A tattoo adds an extra layer of security. Usually placed inside the ear or on the inner thigh at the time of spaying/neutering, tattoos provide a visible mark that helps identify your pet even if a microchip scanner isn’t available. Tattoos can also act as a deterrent to theft, showing clear proof of ownership and making it harder for someone else to claim your pet. By microchipping and tattooing your pet, you’re giving them the best possible chance of being returned home if they ever go missing. Thankfully for Arden he returned home after a few days with no major injuries or illnesses!!
