Snake Envenomation in Dogs

This week’s segment features Portis the 12-year-old lab mix! Portis came to us on an emergency basis after his owners noticed severe facial swelling from a venomous snake bite. Snake bites are a true veterinary emergency. Venom from snakes can cause rapid and severe effects such as tissue destruction, pain, bleeding disorders, and shock — sometimes within minutes. Because the severity of envenomation can vary widely and symptoms may worsen suddenly, immediate veterinary care is critical. In Portis’ case we were already appreciating changes in his bloodwork at the time he presented so it was elected to put him in hospital. Hospitalization allows for close monitoring of vital signs, pain, and clotting function, as well as the prompt administration of supportive treatments like IV fluids, pain relief, and management of swelling or organ complications. Continuous observation ensures that any sudden changes in your dog’s condition are detected and treated right away, greatly improving the chances of a full recovery. After a few days in hospital, Portis was able to be discharged and made a full recovery! Preventative measures can be taken with your pet using the rattlesnake vaccine that is offered here at Emerson Animal Hospital. The rattlesnake vaccine from Red Rock Biologics can help dogs build antibodies that may lessen the severity of venom effects if bitten and is effective for a variety of venomous snake species. While vaccination does not replace the need for emergency veterinary care, it can buy valuable time, potentially reducing pain, swelling, and the risk of life-threatening complications. It’s especially beneficial for dogs living in or frequently visiting areas where rattlesnakes and other venomous snake species are common.
