Pyometra in Dogs

This week’s segment features Izzy the 8 year old dachshund mix. 🐾 Izzy came to us a few months ago for severe lethargy and depression. Izzy had also stopped eating. When Izzy’s owners brought her in we ran bloodwork and found that she had a critically high white blood cell count. We quickly noticed that Izzy was not spayed and when we performed ultrasound on her abdomen we found that Izzy’s uterus was full of infection, called pyometra. Pyometra is a life-threatening bacterial infection of the uterus in female dogs. It’s a medical emergency that requires emergency surgery or it can be fatal. Pyometra is one of the main reasons that early spaying of your female dogs is recommended. Other complications of remaining intact later in life can include mammary cancers. Thankfully Dr. Emerson took Izzy to surgery right away, she recovered well, and is back to her normal playful self! 🐾
