Pancreatitis in Dogs

This weeks segment features Toby the 12 year old dachshund!! 🐾 Toby came to us with vomiting and diarrhea after he had eaten a porkchop. We ran some bloodwork in house and Toby had an elevated white blood cell count (indication of inflammation) in addition to elevations in his amylase and lipase. Amylase and lipase are the fat content within the bloodstream, and when they are elevated they can cause the pancreas to become inflamed. We checked a CPL (pancreatitis test) and unfortunately Toby’s levels were so high they were off the charts!!! Thankfully here at Emerson Animal Hospital we have a new medication called Panoquell made specifically to treat the leukocyte response in pancreatitis in dogs. After just one dose, Toby’s pancreatic levels were almost back down to normal!! Pancreatitis can be a severe condition that can ultimately lead to death if not treated promptly or aggressively. Most of the time, patients with pancreatitis would need several days of intensive hospitalization. Now that Panoquell is available, hospitalization stays can be lessened to overnight or even just a few days!! Thanks to the Panoquell and Dr. Emerson, Toby is back to his normal self!! 🐶
