This week’s segment features Little Bella Maet, the 3-year-old maltipoo!! 🐾Little Bella Mae came to us for lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea after getting some table food. After running some bloodwork, we found that Little Bella Mae was suffering from acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis in dogs is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas, a crucial organ involved in digestion and blood sugar regulation. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (long-lasting), and symptoms vary depending on the severity. Common signs include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Treatment focuses on supporting the dog’s body while the pancreas recovers, often involving hospitalization, IV fluids, medications to manage pain and nausea, and a low-fat diet. Here at Emerson Animal Hospital, we also have a new medication called Panoquell that targets the inflammatory mediators of the pancreatitis and decreases the length of hospitalization. Thankfully, after receiving the Panoquell, Little Bella Mae was able to be discharged from the hospital, and after a few weeks of outpatient care and a low-fat diet, Little Bella Mae is back to her normal healthy self. Pancreatitis, if left untreate,d can become a life-threatening illness. If you are worried about your cat or dog potentially having pancreatitis, give us a call today at (662)524-4155. 🐾
