Importance of Pre-Operative Bloodwork

This week’s segment features Petey the mixed breed dog!! 🐾 Petey came to us to have some masses removed and his owners elected to perform pre-operative bloodwork to assess his organ function before anesthesia. Unfortunately, Petey had some changes in his liver values which prompted us to do an ultrasound of his abdomen. During the ultrasound, we found a large mass on his spleen!! Had we not run the pre-operative bloodwork we would have never found this tumor as early as we did and it could have ruptured and caused him to bleed out internally. Running his labs before surgery literally saved his life!! Petey underwent a splenectomy where we removed the spleen in its entirety and made a full recovery. Thankfully for Petey- the tumor was not cancerous!! We recommend every pet that comes in for an anesthetic procedure have pre-operative bloodwork to allow us to assess that all organs are functioning properly and that anesthesia can be performed safely. In cases like Petey’s, it can save their life!
