Glaucoma in Dogs

This week’s segment features Atticus the 6 year old pomeranian!! 👁🐾 Atticus came to us initially for management of his uncontrolled diabetes. After some additional testing we found out that Atticus also suffered from hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s Disease) where his body produces too much steroid hormone which was complicating his diabetes management. Unfortunately for Atticus, secondary to his diabetes, he began to suffer from glaucoma which is when the pressure within the eyes increases. Symptoms of glaucoma may include redness, cloudiness, squinting, or a swollen-looking eye. After trying management of the glaucoma with drops, we were unable to control the pressure and unfortunately Atticus lost vision in both eyes. Given the blindness and pain Atticus was experiencing due to the glaucoma we made the decision to perform a bilateral enucleation, removal of both eyes. Since the surgery Atticus has had a significant increase in his quality of life and his owner says he is back to his normal happy self!! 👁🐾
