Foreign Body in Dogs

This week’s segment features Butch the 1 year old Jack Russell Terrier!!! 🐾🪨Butch had his routine neuter performed and after he returned home he started profusely vomiting. While we initially suspected it may be a reaction to the anesthesia we took an abdominal radiograph and Butch had eaten a large rock!!! Dogs (and cats) can easily ingest toys, rocks, clothing and other various foreign materials. While some of the time these items can pass through the intestines, however if they become stuck or cause an obstruction they are a life threatening emergency and without proper treatment can result in death of the pet. Butch underwent emergency foreign body surgery where the rock and a few inches of his intestine were removed. Unfortunately due to the large size of the rock and the length of time it was in his intestines, his intestines had started to die around where the rock was located. Dr. Emerson performed an intestinal resection and anastomosis where the damaged part of the intestine was removed and then the intestines sutured back together again creating a healthy gut from end to end. Any time that your pet has continuous vomiting, especially if they are unable to keep down water, whether or not they have a history of eating foreign objects, its extremely important to bring them in for evaluation. After a week of intensive hospitalization, Butch fully recovered from his surgery and is happy, healthy and back home!!! 🪨🐾
