Feline Entropion

This week’s segment features Zane the 9-year-old domestic shorthair cat!! Zane came to us shortly after being adopted by his owner when he noticed that he was having some persistent discharge and drainage from his left eye. After performing a physical examination, we found that Zane was experiencing entropion of his upper left eyelid. Entropion is a painful eye condition where a cat’s eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and surrounding hair to rub against the surface of the eye. This constant irritation can lead to redness, tearing, squinting, corneal ulcers, and even vision loss if left untreated. While mild cases may sometimes be managed temporarily with lubrication or medications to reduce inflammation, entropion usually requires surgical correction to permanently fix the eyelid position. The procedure gently reshapes the eyelid margin, preventing the hair from touching the eye and restoring comfort and normal function. Cats typically recover very well after surgery—most show immediate relief from pain and irritation, and their eyes quickly return to a healthy, comfortable state. Zane had his surgery performed and within just a few days his eye drainage had resolved and he is back to living a happy and pain free life!!
