Coco- Hit By Car in Dogs

This week’s segment features Coco the 5-year-old miniature poodle!! 🐩 Coco came to us after she had been hit by a car. Unfortunately, Coco has a tendency to chase after cars and bite at tires. Thankfully Coco’s owner brought her in immediately after the accident for emergency care and stabilization. Any animal that sustains a traumatic injury should seek emergency care. This usually involves aggressive stabilization which can include- intravenous fluids, pain medications, oxygen if needed, and control of any potential bleeding or hemorrhage.

Additionally, diagnostics will be performed which can include baseline bloodwork, radiographs (X-rays) of the chest and abdomen, and ultrasound of the chest and abdomen to assess any internal injuries. Thankfully for Coco, she did not have any major internal damage. She did however have three fractures of her pelvis. Certain pelvic fractures can require surgery, but in Coco’s case, all she needed was a few weeks of cage rest. Thanks to the quick action of Coco’s owner bringing her in on an emergency basis and the work of our team here at Emerson Animal Hospital, Coco is back to her normal happy self!! 🐩
