This week’s segment features Freyja the Neapolitan Mastiff!! 🐾Freyja came to us and was diagnosed with pyometra, a life-threatening infection-filled uterus. Pyometra can occur in any female that is un-spayed, and is most common in older female dogs. Pyometra is caused by continued elevations in the hormone, progesterone, which predisposes them to the infection each cycle that they have. Signs of pyometra include foul-smelling discharge and bleeding from the vulva, overall lethargy, and vomiting. If left untreated, pyometra can cause the uterus to rupture in the abdomen leading to sepsis and ultimately death. Thankfully, Freyja’s owners recognized the signs of pyometra immediately in her and she was brought in and underwent an emergency spay that afternoon. Freyja’s uterus ended up weighing over 6 pounds from all the infection!! After a few days in the hospital to receive intravenous antibiotics and medications, Freyja was discharged, made a full recovery, and has since been acting like a puppy again!! 💙
