This week’s segment features OG the golden retriever! 🐾 OG came to us a few months ago because he was limping of his front left leg. X-rays of OG’s leg showed that he had fractured his ulna, one of the two bones in the lower forearm. Unfortunately, around his fracture site, OG had some suspicious changes in the bone that in older dogs we worry can be indicative of cancer. After discussion with his owner, we elected to not perform a bone biopsy and to just place OG in a cast to see if his fracture would heal. After several weeks of cast changes and rechecks, OG’s fracture was not bone cancer, but had actually healed on its own!! What OG was experiencing was an inflammatory reaction around his fracture site. Lameness in any animal, particularly in older dogs, should always be evaluated by a veterinarian so that a plan for pain management can be put in place and the injury can be fully assessed. 🩻
