Foreign Body Ingestion

This week’s segment features Troubadour the 4-year-old labrador retriever!! Troubadour came to us for lethargy and vomiting and his owners noted that he had a bad habit of eating socks. Dr. Janzen took radiographs (x-rays) of his abdomen and a sock was found to be stuck in his intestines causing an obstruction. From socks and underwear to toys, rocks, corn cobs, and pieces of clothing, swallowed objects can become lodged in the stomach or intestines and create a potentially life-threatening intestinal obstruction. Signs of a foreign body can include vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, lethargy, diarrhea, or difficulty passing stool. Unfortunately, some foreign bodies cannot pass on their own and require surgical removal. The sooner an obstruction is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of preventing serious intestinal damage and complications. Troubadour underwent emergency surgery to remove the sock from his stomach and after some time, he has made a complete recovery!!
