Feline Stomatitis

This week’s segment features Pangurban the 8-year-old cat!! 🐈 Pangurban came to us for hiding, excessive salivation, and not wanting to eat. On examination, we found that Pangurban was suffering from stomatitis. Stomatitis in cats is a complex, painful, and frustrating disease that causes severe inflammation of the entire mouth, including the gingiva (gum tissue around the teeth) and mucous membranes. While gingivitis only affects the gingiva—or gumline—where the tooth meets the mucus membrane of the gums, stomatitis in cats is a much more severe form of inflammation in the mouth and involves more than just the gingiva. Stomatitis can affect the gums, lips, tongue, the roof, and the floor of a cat’s mouth. While most cases of gingivitis in cats are tolerated, stomatitis is painful and debilitating. Treatment includes performing a dental prophy to scale the plaque off the teeth which can be one of the inciting causes of the inflammation. Additional methods of treatment include laser therapy to help with the inflammation and pain. We also carry several supplements and wipes to help prevent plaque from forming back on the teeth and immune and inflammation modulators. Thanks to this regime, Pangurban is back to her normal self and is living a pain-free life! 🦷
