This week’s segment features Bella the 8-year-old border collie!! Bella came to us for overall lethargy and not wanting to eat. After performing a thorough physical exam and some bloodwork, it was found that Bella had severe elevations in her liver values (acute hepatitis) which was suspected to be from some sort of toxin ingestion. Acute hepatitis is a sudden inflammation of the liver that can develop from infections, toxins, certain medications, poisonous plants, mushrooms, blue-green algae, or other underlying diseases. Because the liver plays such a vital role in filtering toxins and supporting the body’s normal functions, dogs with acute hepatitis can become seriously ill very quickly. Signs may include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, jaundice, increased thirst, or abdominal pain. Thankfully after several days of intensive hospitalization, Bella made a complete recovery!!!
